Cooker Hood Selection Guide: Matching the Right Hood to Your Kitchen

Choosing a cooker hood involves more decisions than it might initially appear. Installation type, extraction rate, hood width, noise level, and the choice between ducted and ductless operation all interact to determine whether the chosen hood will perform as expected in a specific kitchen. A systematic approach to these decisions produces a better outcome than selecting primarily on aesthetics and hoping the specification is adequate.

Starting With Installation Type

The first decision in choosing a cooker hood is whether the installation will be ducted or ductless. Ducted extraction – channelling air outside the property – delivers the best performance and is the preferred option wherever feasible. Ductless recirculation – filtering and returning air to the kitchen – suits situations where external ducting is impractical. This installation decision narrows the product options and helps focus the subsequent specification decisions on models that actually suit the planned installation.

Extraction Rate and Cooking Intensity

The extraction rate – measured in CFM or m3/h – should be matched to the cooking surface below and the typical intensity of cooking. Higher-output gas ranges require higher extraction rates.
